were being evacuated by air yesterday from Shameen,. Canton's foreign settlement, after Friday's anti-British riots, mobs in Shanghai "besieged the British Consulate there for hours.

Five hundred armed police, supported by armoured cars, guarded the Consulate entrances and maintained order within an area of less than a square mile round the building while 10,000 Chinese students shouted anti- British and anti-American slogans and sang patriotic songs.

The demonstrators were protest- ing against the recent British evictions of Chinese living in con- demned huts in Kowloon-Crown territory opposite Hong Kong- the issue which led to Friday's violent outbreak.
